Runnelling to control saltmarsh mosquitoes: long-term efficacy and environmental impacts.

چکیده
Aedes vigilax is a problem mosquito species prevalent in subtropical Australian coastal wetlands. We evaluate the long-term impacts of runnelling, an environmentally benign habitat modification method, on mosquitoes and the wetland environment. Runnelling uses shallow channels to enhance flushing of the marsh. The method successfully reduced larval numbers to below nuisance levels for the 6.5 year study period. We did not detect any significant difference in the wetland environment between runnelled and unmodified parts of the study area. However, the spatial extent of the effects may have extended beyond the modified area.

Long-term Impacts of Runnelling on an Intertidal Saltmarsh
The values of intertidal wetlands have long been recognised (Gosselink et al. 1974, Dale and Hulsman 1990). In Australia, legislation has been enacted to provide for protecting coastal wetlands. For example in Queensland, there are over 50 Acts of the State Parliament, which have application in coastal areas. The major players include the Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) under the F...
متن کاملThe runnelling method of habitat modification: an environment-focused tool for salt marsh mosquito management.
Traditional methods of managing salt marsh mosquitoes focus primarily on maximizing the reduction of mosquito populations, with minimizing environmental impact as a secondary consideration. An environment-oriented approach to salt marsh management for mosquito control, runnelling, is described and compared with other forms of habitat modification such as ditching and Open Marsh Water Management...
متن کاملInvestigation of long-term mangrove and saltmarsh area changes in the Iranian mangrove habitats (Case study: mangroves of Hormozgan province)
In general, investigation of changes occurred in the area of mangrove and saltmarshes indicates the balance between these two ecosystems and plays an important role in providing necessary solutions to maintain their ecosystem services. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the expanse of mangroves and saltmarshes in the mangrove habitats of Hormozgan province during a l...
متن کاملMangrove distribution and mosquito control: transport of Avicennia marina propagules by mosquito-control runnels in southeast Queensland saltmarshes
The saltmarsh–mangrove interface generally constitutes the landward boundary for the grey mangrove Avicennia marina var. australasica, the most widespread species on southeast Queensland shores. A. marina produces buoyant propagules, which are dispersed by tidal waters, only infrequently transported to saltmarsh by the highest spring tides. We predicted that runnelling, a form of habitat modifi...
متن کاملOpen Marsh Water Management: a Review of System Designs and Installation Guidelines for Mosquito Control and Integration in Wetland Habitat Management
Open marsh water management (OMWM) is a method of saltmarsh mosquito control that advocates long-term water management through the use of selective channel and pond creation as opposed to indiscriminate ditching and drainage or temporary chemical insecticide control. This technique has been used for over 40 years in certain areas of the eastern United States and similar techniques have been uti...
